Canada-UK Advanced Manufacturing Mission

ReMAP attended the Canada-UK Advanced Manufacturing Mission on December 4th & 5th in Waterloo, ON.  Innovation hubs, enterprise networks, advanced manufacturing research centres, Multinationals and SMEs from Canada and the UK were there to:

1. Identify complementary capabilities and opportunities for UK and Canadian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), to collaborate through programms such as EUREKA Eurostars and to create globally competitive products, services, and technologies in advanced manufacturing.

2. Raise awareness in the UK of wider Canadian capabilities in advanced manufacturing at the industrial, academic and institutional levels and promote collective approaches to advancing the competitiveness of both nations through joint research and development.

Four key themes driving the Advanced Manufacturing mission:  Additive Metal Manufacturing,  Manufacturing Resource Planning,  Manufacturing Robotics,  Artificial Intelligence for Quality Control

Held at Communitech in Waterloo, ON, the event was hosted by the National Research Council of Canada and the Knowledge Transfer Network  (KTN) UK

The workshop was interactive, providing attendees with concrete examples and demonstrations of additive manufacturing.

How this Mission Happened

During the visit by Prime Minister Theresa May to Canada in September 2017, a 10-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)1,2 on partnership in science, technology and innovation was signed be

tween the two Governments. The United Kingdom is one of Canada’s most significant trading partners, with one of the longest histories of innovation in manufacturing technologies. It has the UK equivalent of SuperClusters, a well-developed network of innovation support through Innovate UK and its 10 Catapults.
