Wind and Solar markets have traditionally adapted distribution type transformers to connect generation to grid. The renewables transformer market is characterized by high performance requirements and challenging cost targets. Traditional approaches either leverage the scale up of ‘padmount distribution transformer’ technology which is cost effective, but has not met the reliability or performance expectations of the renewables market. The proposed approach is to leverage new technologies becoming available for ‘power transformers’ and bring them to the renewables market.
Growing capabilities of Wind and Solar are now exceeding distribution type performance and reliability capabilities.
This project proposes a novel renewable power transformer based on newly developed materials to achieve better performance and higher reliability.
